Budget-Friendly Self-Care Ideas for Moms: Relax, Recharge, and Reset at Home

So often, we believe that self-care requires spending money, making it seem too expensive. Or, we think we don’t have time. I understand the part where we don’t have time, because, if anything, that’s the hard part! However, taking care of ourselves, relaxing, or even just having our nails done, does make a world of difference when it comes to how we feel about ourselves. Which in turn reflects how our attitude is towards life. That is why I’m sharing these self-care ideas for moms on a budget, because it is possible!

Do Your Nails at Home

Believe me when I tell you one of the most affordable self-care ideas for busy moms is doing their own nails. I can’t remember the last time I went to the nail salon to get my nails done. With so many different options out there, there is no need to pay for getting your nails done anymore. There are great non-toxic nail polishes, but sadly, my favorite and what works best for me is not Low-Tox. Yes, I’m on a Low-Tox journey, but there are some things I’m not ready to part with yet, and my favorite nail kit is just one.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Dip Powder Nail Kit- This nail kit is my go-to as of now. It’s not low-toxic product, but it’s super easy, and dries very quickly. It has allowed me to grow my natural nails longer than ever before.
  • Beetles Gel Nail Polish Kit- Before I found the dip powder kit, I used this kit for years. It is still one of my favorite kits because of all the colors that come with it, and because of how quick the polish dries. It even comes with a UV lamp which is a plus.
  • Eternal Nail Polish Set- This brand has a variety of colors and is considered low-tox. I do love this, however, no matter what type of liquid polish I use, it starts to chip off within a couple of days.

Create a Spa Day in Your Bathroom

Never underestimate the power of an at-home spa day, especially for busy moms on a budget. I wear my earbuds to get the full effect of relaxation by blocking out the noise of my house. For the best spa day feel in your bathroom, be sure to light yourself a candle, pour some Epsom salt in the tub, journal or read, and do some breath work (if that’s for you). I also make sure to have my essential oils and crystals to really set the vibe.

Check out my at-home spa essentials:

  • Skull Candy Earbuds- Most people have to have their AirPods, but why spend $200 when there are earbuds like these that do the job just fine? And if you want to avoid unhealthy EMFs while going even more budget friendly, get some good old-fashioned wired earbuds. I use these daily.
  • Dr Teal’s Epsom Salt Magnesium Soak- If you haven’t tried a bath with Epsom Salt, you are missing out. There is no better bath than this. Not only is it super relaxing, but it is also detoxifying. I love the Lavender Epsom Salt, but there is also plain.
  • Luxury Bath Pillows for Tub Neck and Back Support- Another must-have for an at-home spa day that will pair perfectly with a nice Epsom Salt soak in the tub.

Take 10 Minutes for Yourself – Even After the Kids Are Asleep

Staying up 10 minutes after everyone went to sleep was how I started to intentionally get my self-care in every day. I know it can be hard after a long day with the kids and/or at work.  Staying up after everyone was asleep was what I really needed. I’m not talking about staying up on your phone, doom-scrolling social media, or going down rabbit holes on Google. During this time, I journal, read, and do guided meditations. For guided meditations, I suggest Insight Timer. It is a free app that has hundreds of tracks and is perfect for beginners. Be sure to check out my blog post on helpful tools I use to help journal as a mom. If you’re not a night owl, flip it and wake up just 10 minutes before the rest of the house to get some time for yourself before the chaos of the day starts.

Pamper Your Skin & Hair

When it comes to skin and hair, I can say I’m pretty much low-tox. The fragrant hair masks and lotions did me no good. I have been through so many different facial moisturizers and hair kits! Somehow, I always go back to the basics. I use coconut oil on my hair as a hair mask, and let it sit for about 10 minutes before washing it out in the shower. I use Castor oil, Jojoba oil, and Frankincense essential oil on my face with a roller ball bottle. I’m no pro a Gua Sha, but that has been so relaxing and has made such a difference in the way I feel about my aging face. Just 10 minutes of this can make an impact when it comes to self-care.

Below are my Skin & Hair Essentials:

  • Castor Oil, Jojoba Oil & Frankincense Essential Oil mixed in a roller ball bottle– There are dozens of options to choose from when it comes to these oils, but these are my favorites. Mix them all together in a roller ball bottle and you have the perfect non-toxic facial moisturizer.
  • Kitsch Rice Water Shampoo & Conditioner Set- What I love about this set is that we are not wasting plastic, these bars last months and smell amazing, there are so many to choose from with this brand. Once I started, I never went back to bottled shampoo and conditioner.
  • Stainless Steel Gua Sha Facial Tools- When it comes to Gua Sha tools there are also tons to choose from. I use this one because I find it much easier to clean then the ones that are made out of crystals or stones.

Don’t Forget the Power of a Cozy Atmosphere

The simplest form of self-care for moms on a budget is to change your bed sheets, slip into some cozy PJs, and relax in your comfy bed. I make sure to have my Himalayan salt lamp plugged in and my essential oil diffuser on a timer so I know there is nothing left for the day after finally taking a moment to care for myself. I’ve come to realize there is nothing better than being completely relaxed and in your bed with a cozy atmosphere. Its the little things!

Here Are Some of My Cozy Bedtime Favorites:

  • Essential Oil Diffuser- This one is great because it has an automatic timer that you can set for when you want it to shut off. It also automatically shuts off when it runs out of water. I also love all the different colors it displays.
  • Himalayan Salt Lamp- One of my all time favorite relaxation tools that I actually leave on 24/7. The best part about this lamp is the dimmer.
  • Women’s Loungewear- I just had to share this PJs set because I could live in it! Comfy, cozy, flowy… it’s simply the best.

The List of Self-Care for Moms Goes On

Self-care can seem like it’s never going to happen. By the time you get the kids in bed and finish cleaning the house, there is no way you can stay up to do anything. That was the story I kept telling myself. What if you challenged yourself to spend just 5 to 10 minutes doing something for yourself? Once you start challenging yourself enough, it becomes a habit. You will be taking care of yourself, and getting a bit of self-care in every day without spending hundreds every time you’re due for that “self-care for mom” moment you deserve. If you found this blog helpful, send it to another mom who is in need of self-care but is on a budget and save it for later. These Amazon finds for self-care are meant to allow you to feel better without overspending. You got this, Mama!
