7 Essential Crystals for beginners
Are you new to the wonderful world of crystals?
If so you might be asking yourself, are there really 7 Essential crystals for beginners?
The great thing about crystals is that they are not one size fits all.
Just because you’re new to crystals doesn’t mean you must only use certain ones.
In this article I am reviewing some of the easiest to obtain, and most popular crystals among crystal lovers.
There are so many different crystals out there it can be difficult to decide what ones to actually start with.
When I first started my crystal journey I always wondered which ones I should be using. Every time I would ask someone, they would just tell me “whatever one I feel called to.” Um… feel called to?? I never understood what that even meant.
I don’t believe anyone can say for sure what crystals are right for another person. Now I understand why nobody would ever give me a straight answer as to what crystal I should pick.
These are some of the ones that I started with, mainly due to their popularity, and beauty.
I know for sure that number 1 on this list is beneficial for any crystal lover, beginner or not. It is my all-time favorite. And I believe this crystal is highly underrated.

Here are 7 Essential Crystals for beginners, and why.
- Selenite- Named after the Greek Goddess of the moon Selene. This crystal is a self-cleansing crystal that also cleanses and charges other crystals. Selenite is gypsum, also known as Satan Spar and comes in a beautiful form known as desert rose. Selenite is very easily accessible. While it dispels negative energy, it purifies as well. I have Selenite in just about every room of my house. I even have a small Selenite tower that lives in my car. Selenite wands can be used to clear stagnant negative energy away from the aura when used in a brushing, sweeping motion. This is the perfect stone to carry any where you go. Keep it around your other crystals, as I said before it can cleanse and charge all other crystals. Be very careful with this stone as it is not water safe. In some cases, you can give it a quick rinse but it is already susceptible to flaking so I wouldn’t recommend it often, if at all. Selenite is in association with the zodiac of Taurus, and Crown chakra.
- Smokey Quartz– Who wouldn’t fall in love with Smokey Quartz. Especially if you have a root charka that needs to be aligned. I recommend this as a beginner’s stone because of its relation to the root chakra. I do believe that you should have your root chakra in alignment before any other chakra. My goal is to always be grounded and the only way to do that is to have a strong and grounded root chakra. Smokey quartz gently but firmly grounds you. It transmutes negative energy, and can guide you into your desired transformation all while keeping you gently grounded. Smokey Quartz is associated to the zodiac of Scorpio, Capricorn, and Sagittarius.
- Carnelian- Beginning to work our way up the chakras, Carnelian is just one of those beautiful fiery stones that gives you that spark you need to feel confident and ready to go. It doesn’t matter where your going or what you doing, but what ever it is you got in mind Carnelian is going to help you succeed. If you need courage and push, carnelian is going to help you with that. This crystal is easy to come by. Carnelian helps you get creative and motivated. This stone is associated with the zodiac Aries, Leo, Cancer and Virgo. Associated chakra is Sacral.
- Tigers Eye- All though I already have a grounding stone in this list I had to mention Tigers eye. I believe its very important for us to stay grounded in this journey and what better way to do that than to have crystals to support you in that. Life gets stressful, many deal with anxiety, depression, and loss of intuition. Tigers eye helps to focus and clear thoughts. I never understood why I saw so many people wearing Tigers eye, but it is a popular stone for a reason. The balance and good luck this stone gives off is something anyone can benefit from, that’s probably another reason its so popular. This stone is associated with the zodiac signs of Capricorn and Gemini. Root chakra.
- Rose Quartz- Another popular stone that is popular for good reason. Rose quartz is the stone of love, and I mean all things love. Self-love, unconditional love, kindness, friendship, romance, and joy. The world needs more love, this stone is here to help us with that. Using rose quarts for obtaining self-love is something that I believe it is best used for. For some, loving yourself can be hard to do at times, and something many of us struggle with. When you have the energy of Rose quartz helping you, you may realize how important self-love really is. What more could you ask for from a pretty pink stone than the energy of peace, love, and happiness? Rose quartz is associated with zodiac signs Taurus and Libra, and of course the Heart chakra.
- Amethyst- Weather or not you’re a crystal lover, chances are you have heard about Amethyst. This stone is great for beginners because of its ability to enhance intuition and bring clarity. It is known to help break habits and addiction. Working with Amethyst will support you in self-discipline, staying focused and your transformation. Amethyst is a great stone to meditate with and has connection to third eye and crown chakra, in turn making you more spiritually aware. Keep Amethyst on your nightstand or near your bed for a good night sleep. This crystal is associated with the zodiac signs, Capricorn, Pisces, Aquarius, and Virgo.
- Clear Quartz- Last, but certainly not least. Clear Quartz is the master healer. This crystal will amplify the power of other crystals and will pair well with just about any other crystal. Clear Quartz is associated with all chakras. This crystal really does it all. Absorbs, stores, releases, regulates, and amplifies energy. I believe Clear quartz is essential for beginners and every other crystal lover out there. This is the stone of all zodiac signs.
There you have it. 7 essential crystals for beginners.
I must say that it was pretty hard to choose just 7 crystals.
I have found that these 7 crystals are staples to many crystal lovers, and for good reason.
In the end the crystals that you choose to work with are completely up to the person that is using them.
The one bit of advice I have for a beginner on their crystal journey is to make at least one crystal your BFF for a while. Bring it everywhere with you. Wear it, keep in in your pocket, purse, or bra, meditate with it, get to know it. Just knowing it’s there with you will remind you of the properties it possesses and the energy you are able to gain from it.
Keep in mind there are 7 main chakras and ideally you would want one crystal for each chakra.
